Magic Wands

First Grade Magic

First graders began this investigation by looking closely at images of art objects from around the world.
In small groups, students talked about what they saw and made inferences about what the object was, why it was made, and who made it.

Many students thought these objects looked important or powerful, due to their shape, color, and adornment.  Students then reused old rhythm sticks to create their own powerful object- a magic wand!  They began by painting and then added embellishments with materials including yarn, tape, pipe cleaners and paper.  Students were encouraged to think about what their wand could do and how it would work.

Students imagined spells and illustrated magical pictures of their spells in action! We used a green screen and the ipad app DoInk to add our photographs to our illustrations.

Rylee's spell spreads kindness and good thoughts into people's brains!
Woah, Ethan can even make himself invisible!

There were a lot of raining treats in first grade!

Finally, students created and illustrated spell books documenting their spells.

If you had a magic wand, what would you do?
