Superheroes
Second Grade
An important part of art class is thinking and generating ideas. Second graders began this unit with a chalk talk (in our case, a marker talk), thinking and sharing ideas about the things and people they care about.
After everyone had a chance to participate in the written conversation, we shared our ideas out loud as a class. Second graders care about many things, with family, friends, and animals topping the charts. After thinking about their interests and cares, students imagined themselves as a superhero. If you were a superhero, who would you be? What would be your mission? How would you help make the world a better place? Students thought about all aspects of themselves as a hero through a brainstorming sheet. This sheet encourages students to think deeper about the hero they are creating, and to create a more complete character.
Once their character was complete, students transferred their drawings to styrofoam to create a printing stamp and printed 3 prints. Some students went for the challenge of printing two layers of ink.
Printmaking always brings the best "oohs" and "ahhs." It's like magic!

Students completed their superhero unit with a choice project.
I can elaborate on my superhero idea.
Students combined dramatic play with art making to make costumes....
Thinking flexibly- tearing apart paper towel tubes to make armor. |
Some students experimented with manipulating materials to make models and dolls...
Caden's work in progress, he discovered he could make a hoodie! |
Marshall discovered a way to make his doll stand! |
Other students created art that tells a story by writing comics. Many students chose to collaborate on their stories.
